From Memphis to Merseyside Ep. 4
“Mad About Motown”
In the history of record labels few have had the impact on popular culture that Detroit’s Motown Records did. The label, and its mission to further the awareness and popularity of Black music, was launched in 1958 by Berry Gordy Jr. as Tamla Records, switching to the ‘Motown’ name shortly afterwards. Motown was an amalgamation of the words ‘motor’ and ‘town’, signifying Detroit’s status as the automobile manufacturing capital of America. Join us as we explore ‘the sound of America’ featuring music by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, The Supremes, Martha and The Vandellas, Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5, The Temptations and other incredible performers. Motown’s ascendancy in the 1960s left us with a musical legacy that still resonates today.
