February 9, 1964 was a day that changed the world forever. Not because of some political event or conflict, it was instead the result of four long-haired young men from Liverpool who appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show. It is hard today to fathom how monumental this event was. Over 73 million people in America watched this on television (over 40% of the U.S. population during an era when not everyone had a television set). This remains the highest-viewed regularly scheduled programming of all time. Stop and think about that for a moment. This watershed moment gave rock and roll the second ‘big bang’ that it needed, and changed the cultural landscape permanently. It became a Beatles world, and we were all just living in it. The ripples of that big bang can still be felt today, 59 years later.
