Best of the Best

Marc Platt is a seasoned music historian, radio host, and producer best known for his work on Bombshell Radio’s acclaimed series Best of the Best. A Breath of Fresh Air

After the show, Lieberman called Gimbel. Still overwhelmed, she read him her raw emotions from the napkin, trying to describe the spellbinding effect McLean had on her.
“It was like he reached inside me, like he was singing my life.”
That was all Gimbel needed to hear. He recalled a phrase he had jotted down in his notebook years earlier:
“Killing Us Softly with Some Blues.”
The phrase itself had come from the novel Hopscotch by Julio Cortázar, which contained the line:
“…and Ronald was left alone at the piano, with all the time in the world to woodshed some of his bop ideas or to kill us softly with some blues.”
With Lieberman’s deeply personal experience fueling him, Gimbel fleshed out the lyrics, while Fox composed the melody.
They had a song—but they didn’t give Lieberman credit.
