Al Greenwood is a founding member and the original keyboardist of the rock band Foreigner, a group that rose to fame in the late 1970s with a fusion of hard rock, pop, and blues influences.
Formed in 1976, Foreigner’s lineup included Mick Jones, Lou Gramm, Ian McDonald, Ed Gagliardi, Dennis Elliott, and Greenwood, whose classical and jazz background played a pivotal role in crafting the band’s unique sound.
Greenwood’s innovative use of synthesizers and keyboards helped define Foreigner’s biggest hits, like “Cold As Ice,” “Feels Like the First Time,” and “Double Vision.” His creative influence was vital to the band’s first three multi-platinum albums.
After departing Foreigner in 1980, Greenwood co-founded the band Spys, exploring new musical landscapes, blending rock with new wave.
Beyond his band projects, he became a sought-after producer and composer for film and TV, leaving a lasting mark on rock music with his ability to innovate and adapt across genres.
This week Foreigner will finally be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. A long overdue honour that Al Greenwood is very proud of.
He tells us all about his journey with and without the band, this week.
