Michael Shrieve’s musical life is one of extraordinary timing, talent and fearless exploration. Born in California in 1949, Shrieve was drawn to drums at an early age and was already performing professionally as a teenager, backing seasoned rhythm and blues artists well beyond his years. His big break came in the late 1960s when his dynamic playing caught the attention of Santana’s management, leading to an invitation to join the band while still in his teens.
Shrieve quickly became a vital part of Santana’s sound during their rise to international fame. His powerful and expressive drumming was showcased to a global audience at Woodstock in 1969, where his extended solo on “Soul Sacrifice” became one of the most memorable moments of the festival. After leaving the band in the mid-1970s, Shrieve pursued a wide-ranging and adventurous career. He formed and joined projects such as Automatic Man and Go, collaborated with artists including Steve Winwood, Klaus Schulze, Mick Jagger and Pete Townshend, and composed music for film while exploring electronic and world music. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, Michael Shrieve remains an influential and innovative drummer whose impact continues to resonate across genres and generations.
