Spencer Davis was a key figure in British rock, best known as the founder of The Spencer Davis Group, a band that rose to prominence during the 1960s British Invasion. Formed in 1963, the group became famous for hits like “Gimme Some Lovin’,” “Keep On Running,” and “I’m a Man.” Davis, a talented multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, played a vital role in shaping the band’s blues-rock sound. He discovered Steve Winwood, whose powerful vocals became central to the group’s success. Alongside Winwood’s brother Muff and drummer Pete York, the band’s soulful mix of blues, R&B, and rock made them international stars. Even after Winwood left the group in 1967, The Spencer Davis Group continued performing, and Davis himself maintained a long career, keeping the spirit of the band alive through tours and performances. The group remains a lasting influence in rock history, blending American blues with British pop and creating an iconic sound.
We’re joined this week by the late Spencer Davis’ friend and bandmate, Ed Tree who was only too happy to share stories of the time he spent with Spencer.
