Chaz Jankel is best known as the creative force behind Ian Dury & The Blockheads, shaping their signature sound with his fusion of funk, jazz, and rock. His collaboration with Dury produced some of the band’s biggest hits, including “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” and “Reasons to Be Cheerful, Part 3.” Before joining The Blockheads, Jankel developed his skills in jazz and rock bands, bringing a sophisticated musicality to their raw, punk energy.
After his time with the band, Jankel pursued a successful solo career, embracing dance, funk, and electronic music. His song “Ai No Corrida” became a major hit for Quincy Jones, and his own track “Glad to Know You” became a dancefloor favorite. Despite his solo work, Jankel maintained a connection with The Blockheads, reuniting periodically to celebrate their legacy.
Beyond his work with Dury, Jankel has collaborated with a wide range of artists and remains an influential figure in British music history. His ability to blend genres has left a lasting impact, inspiring musicians and fans alike. Whether through The Blockheads or his solo career, Chaz Jankel’s groove-driven sound continues to resonate. His latest re-release is DOA Reinvented – the soundtrack he wrote some 25 years ago.
