Richard Clapton is one of Australia’s most enduring singer-songwriters — a true rock poet whose music has been the soundtrack to countless Australian summers. Born Terry Grafton in Sydney’s north shore in 1951, Clapton took off for Europe in his youth, busking and absorbing the counterculture that would shape his distinctive songwriting style. When he returned to Australia, he carved out a sound that captured the laid-back, sun-soaked vibe of coastal life and the restless spirit of the suburbs.

His breakthrough came with the 1975 hit Girls on the Avenue, a song that still resonates today. Albums like Goodbye Tiger and songs such as Deep Water and Capricorn Dancer cemented his reputation as one of the country’s finest storytellers. Beyond his own music, Clapton became a mentor and inspiration to bands like INXS and Cold Chisel, helping shape the very fabric of Aussie rock.

Decades later, Richard Clapton remains as dedicated as ever — still touring, recording new albums like Music Is Love, and sharing his remarkable journey through his autobiography, The Best Years of Our Lives. For fans old and new, his songs are timeless snapshots of life in the lucky country. Richard Clapton isn’t just part of Australian music history — he’s still writing it, one gig at a time.
