Frankie Miller was one of rock and soul’s most powerful and authentic voices, a singer whose grit and emotional honesty set him apart from the moment he opened his mouth. Born in Glasgow in 1949, he grew up immersed in American blues and soul, influences that shaped his raw, passionate style. Early success came with his band Frankie Miller and the Powerhouse, where he built a reputation as a commanding live performer long before record deals followed.

In the early ’70s, Miller signed with Chrysalis Records and began a remarkable run of albums including High LifeThe Rock, and Full House. These records showcased a rare combination of soulful vulnerability and rock muscle, earning him deep respect from fans and fellow musicians alike. Though never a polished pop star, his honesty and emotional delivery made him unforgettable.

Miller was also a highly respected songwriter. His songs were recorded by artists such as Elvis Presley, Rod Stewart, and Ray Charles, confirming his status as a true musician’s musician. Rod Stewart, in particular, became a close friend and advocate, helping bring Miller’s work to a wider audience.

In ’94, a massive brain hemorrhage abruptly ended Miller’s performing career. While he would never return to the stage, his music endured. Supported tirelessly by his wife Annette, his legacy has continued to grow through tribute projects and renewed appreciation for his catalogue.

Today, Frankie Miller is remembered as a singer’s singer — raw, soulful, and deeply human — whose voice still resonates long after the final note faded.

Scottish author Davy Arthur joins us today following the release of his book about Frankie. It’s called ‘Long Way Home’ and it chronicles the life and music of the legend that is Frankie Miller.
