Ian Gillan is one of rock’s most powerful and instantly recognisable voices, best known as the legendary frontman of Deep Purple. Long before global fame, music was already deeply embedded in his life. Growing up surrounded by musical influences — including an opera-singing grandfather and a jazz-playing uncle — Gillan discovered his passion early. Inspired by Elvis Presley and the explosion of rock ’n’ roll, he cut his teeth in early bands like Garth Rockett and the Moonshiners, Ronnie and the High Tones and, most importantly, Episode Six, where he began developing his songwriting partnership with Roger Glover.
In 1969, everything changed when Gillan and Glover joined Deep Purple. Their arrival transformed the band’s sound into harder, heavier rock, resulting in a defining run of albums including Deep Purple In Rock, Fireball, Machine Head and Made in Japan. Gillan’s incredible vocal range and pioneering belting style helped create classics like “Child in Time,” “Highway Star” and the monumental “Smoke on the Water,” cementing his place in rock history. However, burnout, internal tensions and creative differences eventually saw him step away from the band in 1973.
Gillan wasn’t finished. He launched a successful solo career, fronted the Ian Gillan Band, and even spent a stint as vocalist for Black Sabbath. Eventually, he reunited with Deep Purple, continuing to record, tour, and inspire generations of rock musicians.
Today, Ian Gillan stands as one of the most influential voices in rock — a true icon whose passion, resilience and unmistakable sound continue to define an era.
