Robert “Kool” Bell is a legendary American bassist, songwriter, and co-founder of the iconic funk and R&B band Kool & the Gang. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, Bell grew up in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he and his brother Ronald formed a jazz-influenced instrumental group in the 1960s. Originally called The Jazziacs, the band evolved into Kool & the Gang in 1969, blending jazz, funk, R&B, soul, and later disco into a sound that would define an era.

Under Bell’s steady bass grooves and leadership, Kool & the Gang became one of the most successful bands of the 1970s and ’80s, selling over 70 million albums worldwide.
