This Week in Music History
The Beatles – A Day in the Life
The Beatles’ A Day in the Life is considered one of the most innovative songs in rock history. Released in 1967 as the final track on Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the song combined Lennon’s surreal lyrics with McCartney’s orchestral arrangement, creating a masterpiece that pushed musical boundaries.
On this episode, we uncover how A Day in the Life was inspired by real events and explore its lasting impact on modern songwriting.
Bob Dylan – Lay Lady Lay
Bob Dylan is best known for his poetic lyrics and politically charged folk songs, but in 1969, he surprised everyone with Lay Lady Lay. This smooth, country-influenced track showcased a different side of Dylan, proving his versatility as an artist. Originally written for Midnight Cowboy, the song instead became one of Dylan’s most beloved love songs.
The Monkees – I’m A Believer
The Monkees were often dismissed as a made-for-TV band, but their musical success was undeniable. I’m A Believer, written by Neil Diamond, topped the charts in 1966 and became one of the best-selling singles of all time. Despite criticism, the band proved they had real talent, influencing future generations of pop-rock bands.
Carole King – I Feel The Earth Move
Carole King started her career writing songs for other artists before stepping into the spotlight with Tapestry, her 1971 solo album. I Feel The Earth Move became one of the album’s biggest hits, showcasing King’s signature blend of soulful vocals and piano-driven rock.
Her music has inspired countless artists, from Adele to Taylor Swift, and remains a defining sound of the early ’70s singer-songwriter movement.
Canadian Music Highlights (CanCon)
Canada has produced some of the most influential artists in music history, and this week’s episode features a few of them!
Martha And The Muffins – Echo Beach
Released in 1980, Echo Beach by Martha And The Muffins became a new wave anthem. With its dreamy, escapist lyrics and catchy synth-driven melody, the song remains one of Canada’s most beloved alternative hits.
Bruce Cockburn – Lord Of The Starfields
Bruce Cockburn’s folk-meets-jazz sound set him apart from other singer-songwriters of his era. Lord Of The Starfields is a deeply spiritual track that showcases his poetic lyricism and intricate guitar work. Cockburn’s influence can still be heard in today’s folk music scene.
Barrelhouse Blues Band – Baby Jane/Mr. Lucky
Blues has deep roots in Canada, and the Barrelhouse Blues Band keeps the tradition alive with their energetic and soulful performances. Their track Baby Jane/Mr. Lucky is a testament to their skill, blending classic blues rhythms with a modern edge.
