Scottish singer, songwriter, and bassist David Paton is one of pop-rock’s most underrated yet influential figures. Best known as the founder and creative force behind the 70s band Pilot, Paton shot to fame with timeless hits like “Magic”and “January” — catchy, harmony-rich songs that still light up the radio today.

Born in Edinburgh, Paton cut his teeth on the local band scene before briefly playing with the Bay City Rollers. In 1973, he and keyboardist Billy Lyall formed Pilot with guitarist Ian Bairnson and drummer Stuart Tosh. With the help of legendary producer Alan Parsons, Pilot’s polished sound soared to the top of the UK charts, giving the band a lasting pop-rock legacy.

After Pilot split in the late 70s, Paton’s musical journey was far from over. He became a key contributor to The Alan Parsons Project, lending his distinctive vocals and melodic bass lines to iconic albums like Tales of Mystery and Imagination. He also fronted songs for Camel, and his haunting vocals on “Heroes” remain a fan favourite.

An in-demand session musician, Paton has worked with legends like Elton JohnKate BushRick Wakeman, and even folk greats like Dick Gaughan. Today, he still writes, records, and performs — his 2024 album Communication and autobiography Magic: The David Paton Story prove the magic hasn’t faded one bit.

Discover the story of a true Scottish pop-rock craftsman whose timeless songs continue to inspire.
