Rules Free Radio

The contemporary version of classic freeform, eclectic, progressive, underground radio from the late 60s and 70s. Enough adjectives? Your host is Steve Caplan with three hours of long uninterrupted music sets segued to perfection! A typical show may include all manner of Rock, Jazz, Blues, R&B/Soul, Singer-songwriters, Folk, Latin, Afropop, Middle Eastern, and just about everything in between. Anything that fits to create a musical experience that’s more than the sum of its parts. It’s a show for the musically diverse, curious, and open-minded. You’ll hear brand new artists, new music from old artists, obscure chestnuts, and classics. The unexpected, the obvious, and the “oh wow” factor abound!

Music is not just a passion, it’s an obsession!  I grew up listening to Washington DC’s then-diverse radio, from local Jazz and Pop shows to the Top 40 and Soul stations of the 1960s. Thanks to Ringo, I took up the drums in adolescence. At 19, I started working in record shops. From the start, I was a loyal listener to the legendary freeform progressive station, WHFS-FM in Bethesda, Maryland in the DC area, eventually working there. That’s where I first went on the air and was bit by the radio bug. Although my career went in other directions, my obsession with music remained. I wrote music reviews and artist profiles for magazines including the now-defunct music and radio industry pub, The Gavin Report. After about a 30-year hiatus, I returned to drumming in local Rock and Jazz bands. The radio bug never left and I returned in 2018 and have done shows on a variety of stations ever since.
