There’s a lot going on in this weeks edition of Lost In the Static with BMC

We have a look at the birthday of Blake Schwarzenbach of Jawbreaker and examine his importance as one of punk rock’s most literary and emotionally direct songwriters. His use of autobiographical and narrative writing techniques defined the way Jawbreaker differed from many of their contemporaries.

BMC revisits Jawbreaker’s landmark 1994 album 24 Hour Revenge Therapy and its connection to producer Steve Albini, and the way the album’s raw production style became a benchmark for countless punk and independent bands throughout the 1990s.

Speaking of birthdays, we celebrate the birthday of DEVO frontman Mark Mothersbaugh with a double shot from the band. Mothersbaugh started DEVO while in University and would later become one of the most recognizable composers in film, television, and video games. BMC talks about the chart success of “Whip It” and the often-overlooked commercial reach of the group during the early 1980s along with the misconception that Devo existed entirely outside mainstream music.

Its the anniversary of the release of Ill Communication by The Beastie Boys! The show has a detailed look at the origins of the Beastie Boys as a hardcore punk band before their transition into hip-hop and discusses how they continued incorporating live instrumentation and punk influences throughout their career. and the anniversary of Ill Communication alongside a memorial discussion surrounding original guitarist John Berry.

This week we explore the relationship between punk music and film through the success of “Pet Sematary” by THE RAMONES, and its role in bringing the Ramones to a wider audience outside traditional punk circles.

There’s a look back on the life of Ian Curtis of Joy Division, reflecting on Curtis’s death in 1980 and the difficult final period surrounding the band’s rise. Curtis had struggles with epilepsy and depression and due to the taking of his own life, the planned North American tour never happened.

BMC examines the RISE of Public Image Ltd following the collapse of the Sex Pistols and the band’s deliberate move away from straightforward punk structures toward dub, repetition, and experimental sound design.
