Born in Santa Monica, California, Montoya began his career as a drummer, but his life changed when blues legend Albert Collins took him under his wing in the 1970s.

Collins mentored Montoya, inspiring him to switch to guitar, where he developed his signature left-handed, upside-down style, blending fiery solos with deep emotion.

In the 1980s, Montoya joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, following in the footsteps of guitar greats like Eric Clapton and Peter Green.

This period solidified his reputation, leading to a successful solo career beginning with his debut album Gotta Mind to Travelin 1995.
