Golden Earring, one of the Netherlands’ most enduring and influential rock bands, was formed in 1961 in The Hague by George Kooymans and Rinus Gerritsen. With a career spanning six decades, they gained global fame with hits like Radar Love, Twilight Zone, and When the Lady Smiles, which brought them lasting success in Europe and the U.S. Their sound evolved from 1960s pop into a unique mix of hard rock and progressive elements, marked by energetic performances and adventurous themes.
A key turning point for the band came in 1970 with the addition of drummer Cesar Zuiderwijk, whose powerful, versatile drumming and engaging onstage presence added a new intensity to their music. Known for his dramatic drum leaps and intricate rhythms, Cesar became a core element of Golden Earring’s appeal, with his work on Radar Love making the song a rock anthem. His live performances, often showcasing his theatrical flair, captivated audiences and elevated the band’s concerts.
After their disbandment in 2021, due to Kooymans’ ALS diagnosis, Cesar continued to influence the music scene through teaching and solo projects, cementing his legacy as one of rock’s most memorable drummers and a defining part of Golden Earring’s sound.
