SOME OF THE FEATURES THIS WEEK:
BMC opens the show with a look at Black Flag’s Damaged, the 1981 SST release that became one of the defining documents of American hardcore. The story around the record is almost as important as the music itself: MCA refused to release it, the band pushed forward through SST, and the dispute with MCA’S distribution label, Unicorn became part of the legal chaos that kept Black Flag from releasing new music for a stretch.
We have a look at Gang of Four’s influence on punk, post-punk, and politically minded music, including the band’s clash with Top of the Pops over the lyrics to “At Home He’s a Tourist,” plus IDLES’ later tribute to the group with their cover of “Damaged Goods.”
We spend time talking about Quebec, the 2003 release from WEEN, a darker and more complicated record shaped by label changes, personal turmoil, and the temporary absence of drummer Claude Coleman Jr. after a serious car crash. Josh Freese’s connection to the record opens the door into The Vandals and their cover of “I Have a Date,” originally by The Simpletones.
A brand new single is on this weeks show from the long-delayed Butthole Surfers album After the Astronaut, originally intended as the follow-up to Electriclarryland before label issues pushed the material onto the shelf and into a different form. With the original version as it was meant to be finally released in 2026, the songs are now coming to light.
Music this week includes bands like The Bobby Lees, Pleaser, Lambrini Girls, Snake Eyes, Five Foot Nuttin, Forsaken Profits, The Vandals, Take It Or Leave It, Break to Broken, Dulcet Tones, The Split Dogs, Black Eyes and more.
