This week on Lost in the Static, BMC tells the story of how Brody Dalle arrived in Los Angeles in her teens, formed The Distillers and then created their debut album and released its first record through Hellcat Records, the imprint founded by Tim Armstrong of Rancid.

A major feature is devoted to Glenn Branca, the New York composer and guitarist whose work with Theoretical Girls helped define the no wave movement and directly influenced abnds like Talking Heads, Sonic Youth, and more. The program traces how Branca’s experiments with alternate tunings, repetition, and large guitar ensembles shaped the sound of underground music and, eventually, much of the alternative rock that followed.The show has a look at the release of Sheena is a punk rocker as a single in the UK, and tells the history of the band between the two continents and how they were much more successful overseas than in the United States.
