The show looks at Samiam, tracing their development from Berkeley hardcore into the melodic punk and post-hardcore sound that defined much of their work in the 1990s, including the complicated reaction to their move to a major-label subsidiary.

Jawbreaker  comes into focus a focus on the backlash surrounding Dear You, and the clash between between DIY credibility, major-label ambition, and the lasting influence of a record that was initially rejected by much of its own audience.

We also get into the American underground punk scene, featuring Avail, whose Richmond-based sound helped connect hardcore, melody and Southern influences through the 1990s DIY touring network. The Marked Men represent another generation of fast, melodic American punk, while Discount provides a look at the Florida DIY scene and the early career of Allison Mosshart before her later work with The Kills and The Dead Weather.

The program also revisits Joy Division and New Order, focusing on the relationship between “Twenty Four Hours” and “Ceremony,” a song that connects Joy Division’s final period with the emergence of New Order.  and its place as one of the defining recordings in punk history.
