From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 19 “More Motown!”

When Berry Gordy Jr. founded Tamala Records in 1958, he had a vision of a record label that would encourage black artists, and bring African-American artists the respect they deserved in a radio landscape that was still for all intents and purposes segregated. Tamala Records became Motown Records in 1960, and throughout the following two decades had incredible success with groups like Martha and The Vandellas, The Supremes, The Miracles, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and many more. “Hitsville, USA” became the label’s nickname, and it was well-deserved. Motown also signed several acts from Canada, and had a few white artists on their roster. The one consistent thread running through the narrative was excellent, timeless music. We hope you enjoy this episode of From Memphis to Merseyside, as we spin a fantastic playlist of Motown classics.

Playlist

Thursdays 8pm EST bombshellradio.com From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 19 “More Motown!” When Berry Gordy Jr. founded Tamala Records in 1958, he had a vision of a record label that would encourage black artists, and bring African-American artists the respect they deserved in a radio landscape that was still for all intents and purposes segregated.
