In the decade after World War 2 life in America was about crooners on the radio,
church on Sunday, rigid gender roles and social structures, and the age of the
automobile. On the surface, it was a time of prosperity. But underneath this thin
veneer, a cauldron of unrest was simmering. With the rise of a new type of music
called rock and roll, this cauldron finally boiled over. Music was no longer able to
be segregated, and an entire generation of young people started to question this
social order, including its inherent racism. By the 1960s musicians discovered that
they had a voice, and weren’t afraid to speak out. This tumultuous decade saw civil
rights protests sweep the country, and it wasn’t long before young people started to
question the American involvement in Vietnam. As much as an older generation
wanted things to go back to the way they were before, the world was never going to
be the same.
