From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 18 ‘Close, But No Cigar’

When The Beatles released the double A-side single containing ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ and ‘Penny Lane’ in February 1967, everyone expected it to rocket to number one on the charts. However, this release wasn’t able to knock ‘Please Release Me’ by Englebert Humperdink, out of the number one spot, causing widespread speculation that The Beatles popularity could be waning. Of course, there is more to the story. The Beatles release actually outsold ‘Please Release Me’ by quite a wide margin, but because it was a double A-side release, Billboard counted it as two singles and split the sales, artificially keeping it at number two. On today’s episode we look at songs from each year from 1954 to 1980 that many people think hit number one, but in fact never did. In some cases a few of these songs didn’t even crack the top ten. Sit back and enjoy this unique episode of From Memphis to Merseyside!
