From Memphis to Merseyside Ep 16 ‘The Day the Music Died’

The Day the Music Died. February 3, 1959 was the date of rock and roll’s first great tragedy. Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and J.P. Richardson (The Big Bopper) hopped aboard a charter plane near Clear Lake, Iowa after another show in their Winter Dance Party tour. Holly had chartered the plane after being frustrated with mechanical issues on their tour bus, including a lack of heat. Within five minutes of takeoff, the plane crashed, instantly killing the three musicians and their pilot. All of a sudden, an entire generation of teenagers became aware of their mortality, and the rock and roll world was shaken at the loss. Today, we look at the legacy of this event, but instead of mourning, we choose to celebrate the legacy left behind by these three and how they influenced artists for generations to come. Enjoy the show!
